One evening Anne Mullaney, Brian Mullaney, and Sean Patrick Murphy found themselves, as they often did, sipping pints of Guinness. On this occasion, they pondered what would make their life in Pittsburgh even more enjoyable. What was missing, they concluded, was the ocean and an authentic Irish pub. Well there was not much that could be done about the seaside! However, having spent loads of time in Irish pubs (some would say, too much) both in Ireland and the USA, they figured they might just have some idea about how to bring a good one to the Steel City. From those beginnings, Mullaney’s Harp and Fiddle was born.

From our opening in February 1992, we had several ambitions. We do not want to be just an American Irish-themed bar. Rather, we aspire to replicate the friendly, hospitable atmosphere found in the pubs in every town, village, and city throughout the Emerald Isle. We hope to create an environment where everyone (and their dog, literally) feels welcome and comfortable. Where they can relax, be themselves, meet friends, and make new ones. As a proper public house, the Harp and Fiddle is a place where the whole family is invited to spend time with us.

Of course, traditional Irish music — from foot-stomping old favourites to quiet ballads — is a crucial ingredient in creating the right atmosphere. To stay fresh, we try to mix in new genres, and local talented musicians. We spend lots of time trying to ensure that our menu reflects both traditional and contemporary trends in Irish cuisine. We host authentic Ceili dancing every week. Our annual events include a re-enactment of James Joyce’s Finnegan’s Wake, an autumn Oyster Festival, a radio broadcast of an annual nationwide Guinness toast, and our Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival where singles can enjoy music and fun — perhaps love is in the Eire! And, of course, we are home of Pittsburgh’s biggest Saint Paddy’s and Parade Day hoolies!

We also aspire to be a truly Pittsburgh institution, reflecting the city’s down-to-earth character. Located in the Strip District, we have been active advocates for the rejuvenation of this historic neighbourhood. Indeed, Anne and her husband lived in the area for many years, a short stumble home from the pub. Reflecting Ireland’s reputation as “the Land of Saints and Scholars”, we have built enduring relationships with Irish cultural groups in Pittsburgh. Anne and Maurice even got married in Saint Stan’s, the local neighbourhood church.

Anne, the pub’s heart and soul, sadly passed away in 2011. She is missed, to say the least. However, David Regan, who has been with us from the start, is now the driving force. We have been blessed by a loyal and talented team, including our Head bartender Cork-born Declan, Head Chef Bryan Regan, and Ann Burns (who basically runs the place). Anne’s husband Mo is now also a partner and our landlord (must keep him happy)!
Most importantly, we are grateful to be blessed also with loyal, enthusiastic, fun-loving customers (who are so much more than that to us)!
We hope we are doing something right. We are pleased and honoured to have been named the Best Irish pub in Pennsylvania in 2020. Let’s keep the party going!
